PROJECT DESCRIPTION

THE PROJECT’S CURRENT INVOLVEMENT IN THIS AREA:

Project Description

‘Education For All’ is one of the projects run by Padmashree Society in a village called Bachhara Patna in Orissa, India. This village is located in Jatani block and is 20 km away from Bhubaneswar.

This project targets the children (boys and girls) of daily laborers. Because of their financial situation and the illiteracy among their parents, these children are often forced to join the workforce. So they either drop out of the local Government school or do not enroll in school at all.

‘Education for all’ has 2 distinct activities. It has a pre-school to motivate kids and their parents to send the kids to Govt. school. The age of children who attend pre-school ranges from 2.5 to 5 years. This project provides the children preliminary education, food and medicine.

The 2nd part of this project is a supplementary education program. Once the kids are enrolled in Govt. school it provides them support (tuition, vocational training, food, medicines, and textbooks) to make sure that they don't drop out. This program also provides education to the children who have already dropped out from school and tries to put them back in the Govt. school.

The total number of children enrolled for year 2006-07 is 62. 32 of them attend the pre-school. The pre-school runs from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm. The children are given lunch after the study hour which is also the incentive for them to come to the school. The supplementary education program consists of 30 children. These classes for children are conducted from 4:30pm to 8:30pm. In this program teachers help the students to understand the study material that they had been taught during school hours. This supplementary school ends with dinner around 10:00pm in the night. There are 4 teachers who take care of both the pre-school and supplementary school programs.

METHODS AND TECHNIQUES

GROWTH PROMOTION & SUPPLEMENTARY FEEDING

More than half of all child deaths are associated with malnutrition, which weakens the body resistance to illness. Poor diet, frequent illness and inadequate or in attentive care of children can lead to mal nutrition. If a woman is malnourished during first two years of life, the child’s physical and mental growth and development may be showed

Breast milk alone is the only food and drink an infant needs until the age of six months. After six months, the child needs a vanity of other foods in addition to breast milk. The child diet will include peeled, looked and mashed vegetables, grains pulses and fruit, some oil, as well as fish, egg chicken, meat and diary products to provide vitamins and minerals.

PRE-SCHOOL EDUCATION & CHILDHOOD CARE

Children’s mind develops rapidly when they are talked to, touched and cuddled, and when they see familiar faces hear families voices and handle different objects. They learn quickly when they feel loved and secure from birth and when they frequently play and interact with family members. Children who feel secure do better in school. In pre school center care givers talk and respond to child, the quicker he/she learns. Even if the children able to understand the words, these early conversations develop their language and learning capacities. In pre-school education the care givers help children learn and grow by giving them new and interesting things to look at, listen to hold and play with. In this education system the children teach in their mother tongue as to develop their ability to think and express themselves. So that they can learn language quickly and easily through songs, family stories, rhymes and games. She process of teaching will be “ PLAY AND LEARN. This will reduce the family’s expenditure or health care, the child absence from school due to illness, and the parent’s lens of income when they have to care for sick child.

This pre-school education center encourage children to play and explore help them learn and develop socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually. Here they are insists on trying to do something unaided. They children are allowing playing with simple materials to encourage their development. They will allow playing with water, sand cardboard boxes, wooden building, blocks, & pots and lids. The pre-school education center will improve the water and sanitation related praises. The children are learning to wash their hands before and after touching the food.

The possibility of learning by doing and individualized learning are most important features of our teaching technique. During the teaching process keeps the needs of the child like Educational need, social needs psychological needs & aesthetic needs. We provide lots of concern activities to the children. As a child from the very beginning is interested in creating, when his/her action and thoughts are not perfectly coordinated. We provide opportunities of self-expression & try to develop aesthetic sensitivity in children through various activities of creative arts & try to provide an environment where children can imagine freely and spontaneously. These activities are:

1. Painting

2. Clay modeling

3. Handicraft

Traditional games and yoga are also given due emphasis and special workshops are conducted during the summer session. We also integrate the children by providing mass activities like, mass singing, mass painting, mass plantation, and mass discussion & integration camps. We also enable children to choose activities according to their liking. They are also getting the many opportunities of interacting with renowned educational & social personalities. Our organization has a resource committee for imparting training to parents, teachers & our child project coordinators both from the formal & non-formal education. Our thought is that we can reach a maximum number of children through teachers only. We equip our child educators with a variety of innovative tools, which they can use while interacting with children.

REGULAR SCHOOL SPONSORSHIP

Admission to Government schools often makes schooling un affordable to impoverished students, so sponsorship for the children covering school fees, uniforms, school boxes, text book exercise books and school supplies for the children will provided. Counseling will be provide to assist students in the difficult transition to regular to school. Children who are capable of going to school will be channelising into formal schools through special arrangements with local educational institutions.

SUPLIMENTARY EDUCATION TO CHILDREN AND ESTABLISH

OF CHILDREN’S LIBRARY

An evening class will organize for the children to develop their standard and more involvement in educational system. In day schooling what they have learn they will repeat it in the evening class. So that the interest in the classroom will increase. It will encourage them to go to school regularly.

A Children’s Library which is already established will help the children to develop their involvement in reading books in Sundays and holidays. We have already established CHILD CLUB which will encourage the children to participate in library activities.

PREVENTION OF CHILD LABOR

Children are silent, obedient employees who do not question adult authority. Child labours can only be abolish by providing free, compulsory quality education and nutritional support with incentives for the child such as income generating schemes. They will send to school instead of work. So we are trying to abolish child labours in our locality providing them education and nutritional support. We are trying to engage their families in candle making so that they also allow them to go to school
